Champion hosted Harlandale in a boys non-district soccer match in Boerne Tuesday night and the former district foes played to a 0-0 draw.

Champion is still looking for its first win of the year. They’ve played three matches and have a loss and two ties.

The Chargers are 0-1-2 overall and host another district foe Friday in Boerne when they welcome Memorial.

Champion coach Clifton Tierney said his team is young and is experiencing growing pains but added that they’re moving in the right direction.

“We have a lot of young kids out here, freshman and sophomores out on the field,” he said. “They’re still in the learning process.”

Tierney said he’s moving players into different positions and that’s contributed to the slow start this year.

“They do the small things right but the types of runs we have are off and the decision making is slow because they’re learning new positions,” he said. “All those guys are learning new positions.”

The Chargers had chances to score Tuesday against Harlandale but couldn’t finish. Tierney said they improved as the match went along but weren’t able to score.

“We were hoping to do more offensively, we thought we could but it didn’t transpire,” he said. “We made some adjustments and it got better in the second half but we’re still not where we need to be, still not close. There’s a lot more that we have inside of us than that.”
