SAN ANTONIO – Members of the Champion varsity track and field teams competed at the Region IV-5A meet last weekend at Heroes Stadium in S.A. and several will move on to the state meet.
As a team, the Champion boys placed 2nd with 51 points behind Georgetown (70) and the Lady Chargers finished 4th with 52 points.
The top 2 at regionals automatically qualify for next week’s state meet and the third-place finisher has a chance at a wildcard spot, while the top-6 finishers score team points.
Champion had a total of 11 athletes make it to state in 9 events, plus 5 alternates.
Chachi Gonzales led the way and qualified for state in three different races after she was second in the 3200 (10:46), second in the 800 (2:09) and second in the 1600 (4:57) to earn 24 team points.
Kate Williams placed 5th in the 3200 (11:25), Addison Hankins took 4th in the 100 hurdles (15.67) and Hankins teamed up with Regan Garcia, Meghan Huerta and Riley Burkey for 2nd in the 4x400 relay (3:56).
Burkey also placed 4th in the high jump (5-4) and was 5th in the long jump (17-10) to round out the scoring for the girls.
The Charger boys 4x100 relay of Corbin Mitchell, Arlis Adickes, Alex Rodriguez and Sawyer Bolli teamed up for 2nd (42.27), and the same four also placed 2nd in the 4x200 (1:28) to make it to state in two relay events, while Ranger Lewis, Bolli, Luke Rossi and Ben Blomqvist teamed up for 5th in the 4x400 (3:24).
Adickes finished 3rd in the 100 dash (11.24), Connor Warzecha qualified for state in the discus after he placed 2nd (170-04) and Rossi scored a point in the pole vault after he was 6th (13-06).
Also for the boys, Ephraim Tonn-Bourg placed 2nd in the 100 and 400 wheelchair events to make it to state in both.
Kate Williams and Reagan Burkey will serve as alternates on the 4x400 and Caleb Smith and Luke Rossi will serve as alternates on the 4x100 and Smith and Ranger Lewis are alternates on the 4x200.
