Peggy Sproull
December 29, 1926 – April 23, 2022
Peggy Sproull, age 95, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2022, in her Boerne, Texas, home with family by her side. She was born on December 29, 1926, in James City, Pennsylvania, to Martin O. Moran and Nina Marie Smith Moran.
Peggy was blessed with a large family of five sisters and three brothers (with one bathroom in the house!). She graduated from Kane High School and went on to college at the University of Pittsburgh where she received a BA in education.
On December 7, 1946, she went on a blind date that changed her life forever. She met Bob Sproull on the double date set up by her roommate. When 20-year-old Peggy first found out he was a (gasp) 26-year-old World War II veteran, she refused to go. She had no idea what to even talk about with such an older man. Her roommate prevailed. The rest, as they say, is history.
Bob and Peggy were married on June 3, 1949. Bob was in the Army Dental Corps, and the happy couple moved often and raised a family.
Their children, Robert, Elizabeth, Bill and Brian, were brought along on the journey and travelled the world, especially with the move to Heidelberg, Germany, for four years in the early 1960s. Their last stop in military service was in El Paso, Texas, where they lived for 50 years.
Peggy taught high school business classes when she first graduated from college. As a military wife, she supervised numerous moves stateside and abroad, creating a loving and stable home each time for her family. Peggy was a gourmet cook and passed on an appreciation for this art to her children and grandchildren.
Later in El Paso, she became a Hovious Homes Realtor. Peggy and Bob continued to travel the world and had the kind of lives that kids who grew up in small Pennsylvania towns during the Depression could not have imagined.
A few years ago, Bob wrote a short story about Peggy. In his own words: “The little Irish warrior is one of the bravest women I have known. She created four beautiful children in difficult times and circumstances and created a home wherever we were! Throughout the years, Peg has been my rock of stability. She was the example of what an Army wife should be. She was a charming hostess, and a gourmet cook. She was a leader, with a velvet touch. And she made me feel loved.”
This kind, beautiful and generous woman will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She loved without hesitation and genuinely cared about everyone who she came into contact with. Our family is forever grateful for the friendship and loving care of many, especially Hera and Cathy.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents; sisters Patricia Smith, Anna Katherine Goodall, Helen Ahlers and Madeline Hazlett; and brothers Martin Moran and Edward Moran. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Bob Sproull; children Robert M. Sproull, Elizabeth Hemphill (Dan), Bill Sproull (Shelley) and Brian Sproull (Lezlie); grandchildren Kelsey Falcone (Matt), Patrick Sproull (Kelly House), Jessica Howell (Donald), Robert Sproull, Danny Hemphill, Noelle Hemphill and Jordana Golding; great-grandchildren Nora Falcone and Eliza Falcone; sister Mable Scruton; brother Sam Moran (Carol); and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Grand Ballroom at Menger Springs Morningside Manor; 1100 Grand Blvd., Boerne, Texas 78006 on Sunday, May 15, 2022, from 2 to 4 p.m. Interment will be on Monday, May 16 at 10 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
