Eagles win a pair of low-scoring games

Hits and runs were hard to come by for the Geneva baseball team in its last two games but the Eagles found ways to win both of them.

Hits and runs were hard to come by for the Geneva baseball team in its last two games but the Eagles found ways to win both of them.

Geneva beat St. Mary’s Hall last Tuesday, 3-1, and then edged Hyde Park on Friday in 10 innings, 2-1.

The Eagles are 14-3-1 and open the playoffs this week. (See schedule).

Against Hyde Park, Geneva scored a run in the third, but Hyde Park tied it in the seventh before the Eagles tallied the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Jake Roberson started off the inning with a double, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and then scored on a Chaz Lutz RBI single.

Hudson McNew scored the team’s other run and Guy Kohler hit a triple.

Shawn George went 7 innings and fanned 7, while Luke Valdez threw the final 3 frames and sat down 2 to pick up the win.

Against St. Mary’s Hall last week, the Eagles scored single runs in the 3rd, 5th and 6th frames, while the Barons plated a run in the top of the 6th.

The Eagles only had 4 hits in the game compared to 3 for the Barons and Geneva never scored more than 1 run in an inning.

George Viña doubled and scored, Guy George hit 2 singles, Ford Elizondo singled and scored and Shawn George plated a run.

Guy George was the winning pitcher and threw all 7 innings. George threw 84 pitches, gave up 3 hits and the run scored was unearned, while he struck out 10 and walked just 1.
