SAN ANTONIO – Three members of the Champion tennis team ended the 2022 spring season at the 5A state tournament this week and two of the players earned bronze medals.
The Champion mixed doubles team of Maddox Wilfong and Sophia Raimondo earned bronze on Tuesday after they were defeated in their state semifinals match.
Chargers girls singles player Amber Lewis also qualified for state and was defeated in her opening-round match on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
Wilfong is a senior and so he ended his playing career with a state medal. Wilfong was also Champion’s homecoming king last fall so he’s had a great senior year.
“It’s been a fun senior year and a memorable way to end it. It was a proud moment for us to do so well at the state tournament,” he said. “I just wanted to have fun, I’m not playing in college so I just wanted to go out and give it my best and have fun on the court.”
Raimondo and Maddox beat Kennedy Sharp and Paxton O’Shea of College Station in the quarterfinal round, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, on Tuesday morning.
Later in the afternoon, the duo took on Milla Dopson and Sanjheev Rao from Frisco Liberty and lost 6-1, 6-0, to finish tied for third and earn bronze.
There are no playback matches at the state tournament.
Raimondo is a junior and said earning a medal at state is special.
“It means a lot, it’s something that we’ve been working toward for so long, so it’s a big accomplishment and I’m proud of us,” she said.
Sophomore Amber Lewis took on Megan Do of Nederland and lost 6-1, 6-0, on Tuesday morning in a quarterfinals match.
For Wilfong, he said his best memories of being on the team don’t even involve the matches.
“My best memories are us hanging out and talking, not even the competition,” he said. “Just hanging out and being the family that we are.”
