Chargers baseball team still fighting for postseason spot

Baseball can sometimes be a cruel game and that proved to be the case Tuesday for the Boerne Champion team that traveled to Kerrville Tivy for a key district contest.

Baseball can sometimes be a cruel game and that proved to be the case Tuesday for the Boerne Champion team that traveled to Kerrville Tivy for a key district contest.

A win would have helped the team’s playoff chances and the Chargers outhit the Antlers, 4-1, but lost the game, 2-1.

Champion slips to 8-7 in district and is 15-10 overall. They’ll host Buda Johnson Friday and still have a shot at the postseason but have to win and need some help.

In Tuesday’s game, Tivy scored both its runs in the bottom of the third after they loaded the bases with two walks and a HBP with one out.

Cooper Marshall struck out the next Kerrville batter for the second out, but Eric Tenery came up and hit a two-out single to give the Antlers the 2-0 lead. The Tenery base knock was the only hit of the game for Tivy but it was a game changer.

In the fifth, the Chargers got on the board after Ryan Brandon started off the inning with a double. He moved to third on an error and then scored on an Aidan Pickett sac fly to make it 2-1, but Champion didn’t manage a base runner in its final two at bats.

Kerrville only put one runner on in its last three at bats so the defenses and pitchers were stingy down the stretch.

Jordan Ballin and Quinn Grable both singled, while Brandon added the single to his double and scored the team’s only run.

Marshall went 6 innings and gave up 1 hit, 2 runs, fanned 10 and walked 3 in the tough-luck loss.

Tivy pitchers Stormy Rhodes and Sam Letz combined for 12 strikeouts, with Rhodes going five innings and giving up 4 hits and a run.
