SAN ANTONIO – The Champion boys golf team finished second at this year’s Region IV-5A tourney at San Antonio’s Golf Club of Texas to qualify for state.

Champion will compete at the 5A state tournament Monday – Tuesday, May 9-10, at the White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown where they earned silver medals last year.

The Chargers finished regionals with team scores of 305 and 309 for a 614 to come in second behind an Alamo Heights team that won the region after shooting a 305 and 303 for a 608 to beat Champion by 6 strokes after the Chargers had beaten the Mules at district.

Georgetown was third and also qualified for state after the Eagles shot a 624 with rounds of 304 and 320 in the field of 16 teams.

Maximus Cavazos had the best finish for the Chargers after he shot a 149 with rounds of 76 and 73 to tie for 5th, Roy Barrera IV was three shots back after scoring a 152 with rounds of 75 and 77 to tie for 8th, Phoenix Guerra carded a 153 with rounds of 78 and 75 to tie for 11th, Zach Franz turned in a 160 with consecutive rounds of 80 to tie for 29th, while Aidan Taylor rounded out the team with a 163 after rounds of 81 and 82 for 35th in field of 96 individual golfers.
