Chargers still in hunt for playoff spot

The Champion baseball team rallied against Seguin Friday night at home and kept its playoff hopes alive.

The Champion baseball team rallied against Seguin Friday night at home and kept its playoff hopes alive.

Champion beat the Matadors on Friday, 7-6, and improved to 8-6 in district. The Chargers also played New Braunfels in a non-district contest on Saturday and won, 19-9, and stand at 16-9 overall.

Champion has two games left in district, Tuesday at Kerrville and Friday at home vs. Johnson. After Friday, Chargers coach Ben Woodchick said they need to win both and get a little help. They are currently fifth in the district standings.

At this point, Woodchick said they need to focus on what they can control and not worry about others in the district.

“It’s one step at a time, we have to concentrate on what’s at hand and play our best ball, that’s always the focus but more than ever right now,” he said. “The only thing we control is us.”

In Friday’s game, Champion was up 3-1 at the end of one and added another run in the fourth for the 4-1 lead, but Seguin had a big inning in the top of the fifth and scored 5 runs for the 6-4 lead.

The Chargers got one of those runs back in the fifth to make it 6-5 and then retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth with 2 more runs.

Seguin had a couple of throwing errors in the inning, but Woodchick said their speed on the base paths helped force the mistakes.

“We were fortunate to have them, it had something to do with us running, it adds a little pressure,” he said. “Our base running and our jumps put pressure on the other team, sometimes it causes some of those mistakes.”

Jordan Ballin swung a hot bat and hit 2 triples, drove in 2 runs and scored twice, Quinn Grable legged out 2 doubles and scored twice, Ryan Brandon doubled and scored, while Josh Bowman singled and drove in a run, Connor Holtorf picked up an RBI and Cam Logan scored the eventual winning run.

Holtorf was also the winning pitcher and struck out 5 batters in 2.2 innings of work and didn’t give up a hit, walk or run.

Karson Kaiser started on the mound and 4.1 innings. He yielded 5 hits, 5 earned runs, walked 3 and fanned 7.

Vs. New Braunfels

Saturday’s game vs. the Unicorns turned into batting practice for the Chargers team that finished with 17 hits, 19 runs and 15 RBI.

Quinn Grable led the way with 4 hits and 4 runs scored, while Jordan Ballin, Ryan Brandon, Connor Holtorf and Josh Bowman all had 2 hits in the game. Holtorf and Bowman drove in 3 runs each.

Aaron Basham went 3 innings on the hill and picked up the win. Robbie Vela, Rowdy Miller and Jacob Gresham all threw in the game as well.
