Chargers looking for strong finish down the stretch run

Before this season, the Champion baseball team only had one head coach in its history but all that changed when Chuck Foster retired at the end of the last school year.

Before this season, the Champion baseball team only had one head coach in its history but all that changed when Chuck Foster retired at the end of the last school year.

Ben Woodchick was hired from S.A. Brennan where he had a lot of success and the Chargers’ first-year coach said he really likes coaching at Champion.

“It’s been awesome, the kids and the community are unbelievable,” he said. “I’m proud of our guys and I love being here - great people and a great community.”

With a new coach there’s always a change in routine and Woodchick said the team has accepted things well.

“Every coach brings something different with them and I think that’s a little bit of our growing pains. There’s new stuff and we’re adjusting to that and adjusting to each other, but they’re super coachable and they’re taking it great,” he said. “It’s not that we’re changing a lot, but little things here and there and we’re starting to do that and hope we can hit full stride.”

The district race

Champion is 7-6 in district with only three games left and is currently in the muddled middle of the 26-5A standings.

NB Canyon is closing in on first at 12-2, Dripping Springs and Buda Johnson are tied for second at 9-4, Alamo Heights is 8-5, Champion and Lehman are both 7-6 and Kerrville is 5-7, while Seguin and Veterans Memorial are out of the mix at this point.

The Chargers started 0-2 in district but reeled off 4 straight wins. They also lost 3 straight before winning their last 2 and Woodchick said they need to be consistent, especially as they head down the stretch run.

“We’re really good at times and we’ve been bad at times, we just have to get more even keeled,” he said. “We have to play good baseball, throw strikes and play good defense and if we can do that, we’ll be pretty darn good.”

Woodchick said 26-5A contains some evenly matched baseball teams.

“Every team, even the teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year, we’re all competitive and all winning some big games,” he said. “We’re fighting tooth and nail every single night. It’s always high energy, close baseball and the score sometimes doesn’t depict that, but it’s competitive top to bottom.”
