Boerne ISD weighing voucher bill’s impact

Gov. Greg Abbott last week hailed the Texas House of Representatives’ passage of Senate Bill 2, the state’s universal school choice program.

Boerne Independent School District officials are studying the bill and its impact on the district, its students, and taxpayers.

“For the first time in Texas history, our state has passed a universal school choice bill out of both chambers in the Texas Legislature,” Abbott said. “This is an extraordinary victory for the thousands of parents who have advocated for more choices when it comes to the education of their children.”

Since March, Boerne ISD has been communicating with parents and caregivers weekly to update them as things progress, and set up a website — BoerneISD. net/insession — to share information with community members.

Boerne ISD School Board trustees have spent a great deal of time over the past few months in Austin advocating on behalf of public schools.

“Many of our concerns were reflected in the amended HB2, which would generate over $5 million in new money vs. current law for our district,” said Rich Sena, board trustee.

“This is progress, but is still less than the $10 million gap between our current funding and what our funding would have been,” he said, “if state funding formulas granted us revenue to keep up with inflation and enrollment growth since 2019, which was the last time funding formulas were updated.”

Board President Garrett Wilson shared, “The initial version of HB2 had a disappointingly low financial impact on BISD. We are encouraged. We are eager to see legislators make decisions that benefit all public schools before we can confidently predict how this will impact our district.”
