The Champion baseball team continues to play well and make a strong push late in the regular season as they look to clinch a playoff spot.
Champion defeated Wagner on Thursday, 14-1 in five innings, and has now won three in a row and six of its last seven in 26-5A as they enter the final week of the regular season.
The Chargers are 21-7 overall and 10-4 in district and need one more win to make the playoffs.
Champion and Pieper are currently the only teams in 26-5A with 10 wins, but three others (Boerne, Smithson Valley and New Braunfels) are right behind them with 9 wins.
Champion closes out the regular season this week with two against Kerrville Tivy. They were at Kerrville Tuesday and host the Antlers on Friday.
The Chargers knocked out 13 hits in Thursday’s game, including a home run and four doubles.
Champion rode a fast start to the win and tallied 6 runs in the first, 2 in the second, 4 in the third and 2 in the fourth before the Thunderbirds could score.
Cal Isley homered in the third and also singled in the game, scored twice and drove in 2 runs. Jaedyn Yamaguchi doubled and hit 2 singles, drove in a run and scored 2 runs, Garland Whitehead doubled, smacked 2 singles, collected 2 RBI and scored 3 runs, Owen Kuhl doubled and scored, while Sawyer Smith doubled and singled and pushed in 3 runs.
Andrew Harrison walked twice and scored 2 runs, Austin Garritano singled, walked twice and drove in 2 runs.
Sawyer Smith went 3 innings on the mound and picked up the win after he scattered 2 hits and no runs. Pearce Kelly and Parker Davis both threw one frame each and gave up 1 hit each.
