Bears bump Boerne baseball team,

6-5

Boerne High is taking a break from district baseball action this week, but the Greyhounds did pick up a non-district baseball game Tuesday at La Vernia.

The Bears edged the Hounds by a run, 6-5, despite a home run from Hudson McNew, his fourth in two games.

Boerne is 16-5 overall (8-3 in district) and resumes 26-5A play this week against Pieper. The Greyhounds host the Warriors on Monday and are at Pieper later in the week to close out the series.

BHS coach Geoff Curtin used the opportunity to get his pitching staff some work and threw five different hurlers in the game.

Campbell Jackson made his usual start but only went 2 innings. Brandon Browning, Braden Ramirez, Eli Srp and Asher Wren all threw one inning each.

Boerne scored 3 of its 5 runs in the first inning after Brooks Perez, Walker Hill and Dylan Perez all singled to start the frame.

La Vernia answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the second and never trailed from there. Five singles and an error helped the Bears take a 4-3 lead.

La Vernia pushed in another run in the third and it was 5-3, but Boerne cut into the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth.

After Ronnie Scarbrough singled, his courtesy runner Otis Skubal made it to second on a wild pitch. From there, Brooks Perez doubled to bring in Skubal and the lead was down to a run at 5-4.

A double and a single by the Bears in the bottom of the sixth helped them bump the lead to 6-4 as it headed to the seventh.

McNew started off the frame with a solo shot to left and the lead was down to a single run again with no outs, but three straight ground outs ended it.
