Chargers pummel Patriots in district opener

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Champion baseball team came alive and responded with 16 runs in its last three at bats.

The Chargers scored 13 of those 16 runs in two innings to kick in the mercy rule as they picked up the 16-3 victory over Veterans Memorial in five innings.

Champion knocked out 13 hits in the game and recorded 3 runs in the second, after not scoring in the first frame. The Chargers added 6 runs in the third and 7 more runs in the fourth and didn’t have to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

The Patriots scratched for 2 runs in the top of the first and added another in the third for their 3 runs.

Three of Champion’s 13 hits were triples from the bats of Garland Whitehead, Aidan Smith and Jaedyn Yamaguchi.

Whitehead also singled, scored a run and collected 3 RBI, while Smith and Yamaguchi both scored.

Cal Isley finished with 3 hits, scored a run and pushed in 3 runs, Sawyer Smith took 3 walks as the Chargers were patient at the plate and were issued 10 walks.

Owen Kuhl knocked out 2 singles and scored 3 times, Andrew Harrison was walked twice, hit a single, picked up 2 RBI and scored 3 runs, while Sam Miller singled, was issued 2 walks and drove in 2 runs.

Austin Garritano singled and pushed in 2 runs and Mark Thompson scored twice.

Smith tossed 4 innings and picked up the win on 60 pitches. He gave up 4 hits, 1 earned run, didn’t walk a batter and fanned 3.

Pearce Kelly pitched an inning and struck out 2 and didn’t yield a hit, walk or run.

The Chargers are 1-0 overall and in district after Tuesday. Champion was supposed to play in the NISD tourney this weekend but it was called off.

They were scheduled to host MacArthur Saturday, 2 p.m. and resume district play against Smithson Valley Tuesday at Charger Field before playing in the Comal tourney this coming weekend.
