Smithson Valley also beat the Champion girls in the first round of 26-5A play by the same score, 4-0.
The Lady Rangers are the only unbeaten team in 26-5A at 7-0-2 and sit in first place.
The Lady Chargers were off Friday and resume district play Tuesday at Alamo Heights. Next Friday, Feb. 28, the Champion girls host Boerne High for their second- round meeting.
BHS is in fourth place at 7-3 and just ahead of the Chargers in the standings so next Friday’s match will likely have playoff implications.
Champion is 6-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in district.
Varsity Boys
The Smithson Valley boys soccer team put together a late rally to erase a 3-1 deficit and defeat the Chargers.
Champion was up 3-1 but three goals by the Rangers in the final 8 minutes flipped the momentum to their side and they went on to claim the 4-3 victory.
Champion slips to 2-7-5 overall and is 2-4-4 in district. The Chargers were off Friday and resume district play Tuesday at home against Alamo Heights.
Champion had a great start to Tuesday’s district match at Smithson Valley and scored a goal eight minutes in when H Vogt knocked one in on a Nathan Bell assist for the 1-0 lead that held until halftime.
Despite the cold weather, the teams were just starting to heat up in the second half with six goals between the two squads.
Smithson Valley tied it up four minutes into the second half to make it 1-1, but the Chargers tallied the next two goals after Vogt netted a goal on the Bentley McCool assist.
Eight minutes later, Alister Clyne knocked in an unassisted goal and it was 3-1 in favor of the Chargers with 15 minutes to play, but the lead didn’t hold.
The Rangers tallied goals in the 32nd minute of the second half, again in the 34th and another in the 38th minute for three goals in six minutes to tilt the scoreboard in their direction, which is where it stayed.
