March 14, 1927 – Feb. 22, 2024

Lena Mae (née Fick) went to heaven on Feb. 22, 2024, at the age of 96. She was born on March 14, 1927, in Snook, Texas, to Charles Otto and Myrtle McNeil Fick.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ray; her siblings, Casper Fick, McNeil (Mary) Fick, and Charles Fick; brother-in-law, Ewald Ising; and numerous cherished friends, with whom she is now reunited.

Lena Mae met Ray at Black’s Pharmacy in College Station, Texas, where she worked behind the counter and served him patty melts. They married in 1949. In 1951, after Ray graduated from Texas A&M, they moved to Kerrville, Texas, before settling in Boerne.

They lived in a small house on Hickman Street before moving into a home on Roeder Street, where she lived for more than 50 years. Lena Mae worked as the secretary at the family business, Boerne Veterinary Hospital.

She was active in community organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Federation of Republican Women and the Salvation Army, and felt a strong sense of civic duty. She applied her sharp mind not only to word puzzles and Wheel of Fortune, but also to her beloved Bridge Club.

Lena Mae was baptized at Saint David’s Evangelical Church in Mound Prairie, Texas. As a young woman, she played the pump organ at a Lutheran church in Burton, Texas, and later restored an organ from the same church, which she kept all her life.

After moving to Boerne, Lena Mae joined the First Baptist Church of Boerne, where she played the piano on Sundays.

Lena Mae was the matriarch of the family. She showed her love by feeding people delicious homemade Southern food in her beautiful home, under the pomegranate tree at the family farm, or on the sprawling lawn of the Snook homestead. She was always the first one awake to make the coffee, warm the toast, and set out the paper.

Some of her favorite things were a good burger with a cold Coke, cats (if they stayed outside), antique furniture, classic country and western music, and a drive through town in her classic Lincoln to talk about how things had changed.

Lena Mae is survived by her sister, Bobbie Ising; two sons, Duane (Jackie), and Dan (Patty), one daughter, Linda Folmer (Andrew); seven grandchildren, David (Tawnya), Dustin (Jennifer), Suzie , Jennifer Johnson (Jeff), Sara (Dustin), Amy Weitlauf (Carl), and Daniel Folmer; her many great-grandchildren, and beloved extended family members spread all across the state of Texas.
