Steven Michael “Doc” Smith, 70, died March 8, 2025, at Town and Country Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boerne, Texas.Steven spent most of his life in Fort Worth but moved to Boerne in 2011 to help a friend restore a 1940s rock house.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in science from Texas Wesleyan University, Steven worked at General Dynamics in aerospace engineering. He then became a farmer, rancher and builder.

At 40, Steven returned to school, earning a doctorate in the humanities and English rhetoric, hence the nickname “Doc”, then began teaching English at the college level.

Steven was an accomplished writer. In addition to winning several awards for his poetry, he was also a regular contributor to The Progressive View in the Boerne Star. His contributions were well-received, frequently covering topics including disinformation, dialogue matters, nationalism and civility, and childhood trauma.

Steven loved when football season came around, as he was a big fan of TCU. He loved thoughtful conversation and talking for hours, and loved his dog, Eddy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne Douglas Smith and Eva Lucille Black, as well as one brother, Mark Smith. He is survived by many friends and his dog, Eddy.
