Fred William Friar
Fred William Friar of Boerne, Texas, died March 25, 2025, at his home. He was born on Dec. 6, 1946, in Brady, Texas, to James “J.V.” and Oleta “Fritz” Friar.
He graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1965 and then served in the U.S. Army Reserves for eight years.
In 1966, he met the love of his life, Betty Klabunde, at Anhalt Dancehall, and they married in 1969. Fred worked as a ranch foreman, machinist and private security officer until he found his passion for firefighting.
He was a founding member and volunteer firefighter in the Leon Springs Fire Department for 12-plus years, then a 25-year full-time firefighter, paramedic, peace officer and arson investigator for the Leon Valley F.D. until his retirement in 2006.
He loved hunting, fishing and watching his kids and grandkids’ activities. His favorite times are dancing with Betty to old classic country music.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty; two sons, Carlin (Susan) Friar and Corey (Stacie) Friar; one daughter, Chrysti Friar; six grandchildren, Blake, Grant, Chloe, Mason, Hayden and Heston Friar; one brother, Virgil Friar, and one sister, Darlene (C.D.) Lewis; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of wonderful friends. He was also Godfather to Lisa Beath Blank.
He is preceded in death by his parents. J.V. and Fritz Friar; a sister, Mary Friar Lincoln; and a nephew, Larry “Tinker” Carmack Jr.
The family would like to thank Dr. Manuel Quinones, his staff and All County Hospice for their care and compassion in his final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. April 5, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church in Boerne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred’s honor to the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department @ boernefire.org.
