David Koontz

David Koontz

Jan. 17, 1966 Dec. 13, 2024

Dave passed away peacefully at his home with his brother, Gary at his side on Dec. 13, 2024.

Dave was born to parents Jack and Lila Koontz on Jan. 17, 1966, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Dave grew up in Jenners, Pennsylvania, but started a new life in the U.S. Army after leaving high school. He trained as an armor crewman for the M1A1 Abrams tank and was transferred to the Federal Republic of Germany immediately following his training.

Dave was serving as a tank crewman with B Co, 3/8 Cavalry when he met the love of his life, Kristi A. Dorethy. After a short courtship, Dave completed his tour and was transferred to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss, Texas. As luck would have it, Kristi’s father was transferred to Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss about the same time, and they were able to continue the courtship until they were married.

Shortly after marriage, Dave was deployed with the 3rd Armored Cavalry to Iraq for Operation Desert Storm where he served honorably in combat operations. It wasn’t long after he returned from Desert Storm that the Army transferred him away from home and family to Korea for a one-year tour.

After returning from Korea, Dave served the remainder of his enlistment again with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss. Dave decided to end his military service and venture into the civilian world where he wouldn’t be separated from his family on a continuous basis.

He relocated to Boerne to go into business with his father-in-law and they provided imaging supplies and services to Boerne and the Hill Country for 30 years.

Dave’s poor health eventually forced him to close the business, and remove himself from actively serving the community, business associates and friends.

Dave was known for his friendly and honest way of doing things. He never met a stranger, and everyone liked and admired him. He was great with animals and children, who loved being around him.

Dave loved to fish and camp and always looked forward to taking his sons on his father-in-law’s annual grandpa’s fishing trips. He was an avid old car buff and loved working on and driving his bright red 1969 Camaro.

Two of the things he enjoyed most during the final couple of years of his life were listening to country and western music with his dog, Bear, and taking Bear on rides with him in his truck.

Dave was a really good man and will be missed by all those in the community who knew him. His family will never be able to fill the void he leaves behind, but will always keep him in their hearts and prayers.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lila Koontz. He is survived by the love of his life, Kristi Koontz; two sons Corey M. (Gaby) Koontz of San Antonio, and Cody D. Koontz of Beeville, Texas; and one granddaughter Coralynn Koontz of San Antonio.

He is survived by two brothers, Gary E. (Tracy) Koontz of Berlin, Pennsylvania, and Roger J. Koontz of Boswell, Pennsylvania. He is survived by siblings-inlaw, Robin (Clint) Cypert of San Antonio, Chad (Lourdes) Dorethy of San Antonio, Eddie (Tiffany) Easterling of May, Texas, and Johnny Coffey of Boerne; and at least 19 nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service with full military honors, and interment at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 10:15 a.m. Dec. 31, 2024, Shelter area 2.
