Beverly Burk
Beverly Dean Burk, 74, of Boerne, Texas, passed away Nov. 1, 2024, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s.
Beverly was born on Aug. 22, 1950, to Alvin Jay and Francis Dean of Corpus Christi, Texas. She graduated from Calallen High School in 1968, where she excelled as head twirler and saxophone player in the band. She went on to study at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas, graduating with a degree in home economics followed later by a Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Seminary in 1996.
In 1970, she married Gary Slusher and spent her early years of marriage raising her family while building an interior design business in Corpus Christi. Her eye for colors, textures and spaces was enviable.
As a personal challenge she earned her pilot’s license and flew for many years. She always said she felt closer to God when she was in the clouds. She loved to cook and always strived to be the perfect hostess for friends and family.
She felt God calling her to church ministry and became an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church in 1998. Over her more than 30 years of ministry she served churches in Corpus Christi, Georgetown, Austin, Hondo, San Angelo and Boerne.
While serving in Austin she met Rev. Dr. Ricky Burk and they were married April 24, 2004, at her church in Hondo. Together they worked to build churches for Jesus Christ here and internationally.
Their love of travel took them to Uganda, Israel, Jordan, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Santorini, Mykonos, Alaska, Costa Rica, Mexico, France, England, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium and numerous U.S. national parks.
Beverly was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Ben and Velma James, as well as her father, Alvin J. Dean. She is survived by her mother, Francis Dean Marshall; one sister, Becky Cassels; one son, Brannon (Jennifer) Slusher; one daughter, Lori (Brad) Genzer; seven grandchildren, Camden Genzer, Allison (Chris) Malone, Brayden Genzer, Mason (Leslie) Cass, Weston Juelg, Brittanny (Tyler) Briley and Caitlyn (Gus) Pinsoneault; and four great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
