Howard “Ed” Prather
March 13, 1929 -- Oct. 25, 2024

“Ed” was a loving, generous man to his family and friends. Although he buried his wife (Nancy) almost 20 years ago, a daughter (Paula) six years ago, his mom, dad, two sisters, two brothers and many friends, he professed he was a very lucky man and was very thankful.

Ed was born March 13, 1929. At 17 he enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force. His career in civil service took him to almost every base our brave men and women occupy in this great big world.

He never returned home without gifts for his bride and three girls. He worked hard in his long, 34-year career and retired in the esteemed position of deputy chief of the Office of Civilian Personnel Operations.

He loved golf. At Buckhorn Golf Course in Comfort, he played regularly until two years ago and over the years spent many Saturday mornings as marshal. He loved watching college football on Saturdays with family.

He loved woodworking and made many gifts for family — cedar chests, tea carts, little wooden angels. For friends, he constructed kitchen bars, banisters, installed cabinets and other improvements for their homes.

He loved his church, St. Helena’s Episcopal in Boerne. For many years he was a leader serving as senior warden, assembled a finance committee for what is now Wendler Hall, served on many committees and regularly participated in House of Luke, dinners for 8 and social activities. His deep, loud voice will be missed on Sunday mornings.

His 4th Day Men’s Group was something he also loved dearly. For at least 15 years this group did a long weekend camping trip for a cookoff in Terlingua in Big Bend which was one of his favorite places to visit because of the majestic size and beauty. The companionship, friendship of these men meant the world to him.

When he no longer drove, these wonderful friends made sure he was at the weekly Wednesday morning get togethers.

There are no words to describe how much his absence will be missed by his two daughters, Karen (George) Short and Gwynne (Larry) Wright; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Helena’s Episcopal Church Outreach and/or Youth Ministry.

Ed will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church in Boerne. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Outreach and/or youth ministries would be appreciated.
