Gary Jim Gorden, 78, of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024.

 

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, he attended Thomas Jefferson High School, San Antonio College, Southwest Texas State University and Kansas State University. His life was marked by a passion for learning, leading to a path filled with accomplishment and service.

Gary served his country proudly in the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence Corps as an aerial photo interpreter. His keen eye led to the discovery of the first hidden Viet Cong camp during his service in Vietnam, earning him several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After his honorable discharge, Gary brought the same diligence to his civilian life. He began as a computer programmer for Ross Perot in Dallas but later pursued a master plumber’s license, successfully operating Allied Plumbing for 14 years.

Later, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to retail sales of statuary, outdoor furniture and antiques. His creativity was evident in his ability to transform ordinary objects into yard art for which he had an ongoing waiting list.

Eventually, Gary transitioned into property management, creating Live Oak Village, where he formed many lasting friendships A devoted Christian, Gary lived by his faith and knew God so loved the world that He gave his only son so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Gary thoroughly enjoyed time with his family, especially during holidays.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of more than 55 years, Jean Nelson Gorden; one daughter, Shannon (Jeff) Webb; a foster son, B.T. Tumlinson; two cherished grandchildren Joshua and Jaclyn; one brother, Dustin (Bonnie) Gorden Jr.; his sister, Yvonne (Allen) Shirey; and a loving, extended family of nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends.

A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at Sunset North Funeral Home on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, at 11 a.m., with a service at noon. The committal service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Fisher House Foundation.
