Joseph Bergmann was born in Boerne to Clarence and Shirley Bergmann on Nov. 29, 1944. He died peacefully in Boerne on Aug. 4, 2024, after declining due to dementia.

He went to St. Mary’s University for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, served in the U.S. Navy, then spent 29 years working as a civil servant with the U.S. military.

He married Patricia Dacy in 1967, and they had two children, David “Chris” and Carey. He was a member of and served as lay reader for St. Helena’s Episcopal Church.

Outside of his occupation and family, Joe’s passion was malacology where he specialized in land snails and freshwater bivalves. He later became a Master Naturalist and was honored to have a new species of mussel named in his honor, Lampsillis bergmanni.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Pat, one son Chris, one daughter Carey, and two grandchildren, Brayden and Adyson.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 12, 2024, at St. Helena’s Episcopal Church in Boerne with reception to follow.
