George Marshall Plummer
George Marshall Plummer
In loving memory of George Marshall Plummer, devoted husband, dad, “PoPo” and well-respected pharmacist, who passed away from this earthly life to his eternal home on July 7, 2024, at his home and surrounded by his loving family.
George was born in Texas City, Texas, on July 27, 1943, to Marshall Lee Plummer and Beverly (Beeler) Plummer, the first of two children. George was born at his uncle’s clinic during the “Surprise” hurricane of 1943, in knee-deep water and with no power. He passed away as Hurricane Beryl approached the Texas coast.
George grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast, graduating from Texas City High School in 1961. He attended the University of Houston, graduating with his master’s degree from the School of Pharmacy in 1966.
George bought Roberts Drug Store and then Surrey Village Dress Shop on Main Street in Boerne, Texas, and was in business for 25 years until he sold and went to work at the Boerne H-E-B pharmacy. He retired as a pharmacist in 2006.
George had many loves in his life; first and foremost, his best friend and wife of 48 years, Alice, who kept him going with her constant love, devotion and care. She was his best helpmate and an even better nurse.
George loved his family — his daughter, Gayna, son-in-law Stephen, and son, Randy. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George looked forward to his weekly phone calls from friends, especially his sister Anna Clare and husband Dennis, as well as his many extended family members of nieces, nephews and cousins who always stayed in touch.
George loved to learn and enjoyed serving people. He proudly served his Boerne community not only as a pharmacist but also as a City Council member, mayor pro-tem, elected constable, member of the original Economic Development Committee, Frost Bank Advisory Director (for 30 years), on various Boerne school committees, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club president, director of Berges Fest, Cibolo Six Band member, Boerne theater, chorus and Library life member.
George was an avid outdoorsman and hunting was a passion. He looked forward all year long to his annual hunting trips with his buddies and son, Randy, to New Mexico, and to spending time with family hunting at Plummer Ranch.
George had a deep love for flying. He was a licensed pilot and owned several private planes over the years. He enjoyed golfing in high school and after moving to Boerne was a member of the Kendall County Golf Association.
He was also a life member of the bowling league at Turn Verein. In retirement, he loved ranch work both at home on the Boerne family property and at the family ranch in Ingram, spending much time on tractors and 4-wheelers.
He enjoyed “puttering” around, fixing and restoring things at both properties — he called it “tinkering.” He also looked forward to meeting up with his buddies at the Valero on Johns Road each Thursday evening for conversation and scratch-off tickets.
George was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Boerne, a member since 1968. He loved this church family dearly and served on many committees. He was especially blessed in his experience and participation in Walk to Emmaus.
George was a “hummer” and always had a melody in his heart. His love for music was evident in his singing in the church choir for 50 years.
He loved to make people smile and regularly teased friends and children alike to get a smile from them. He was never at a loss for words and always had a comeback. He was honest, brief and deliberate with his words. His faith was strong, even through his cancer journey, always saying how he was the luckiest man.
George’s cancer journey commenced in 2007 with treatments along the way until a year ago when he was diagnosed with an additional cancer, acute leukemia. He had a deep affection for all the wonderful doctors, nurses and medical team and always felt he was treated like royalty.
He truly considered them a part of his extended family with much admiration for them, mentioning what a difficult job they have and always entering the infusion room with much humor and “I’m still here!”
George leaves behind a strong legacy — a legacy of a life of faith lived out through his actions, his love, his care for others and his commitment to both those he loved most and those he barely knew. He took us all along on this journey with him and we are forever changed for the good.
George was preceded in death by his mother, Beverly (Beeler) Plummer, and father, Marshall Lee Plummer.
He is survived by his wife Alice (Gombert) Plummer; one daughter, Gayna (Stephen) Johnson; one son, Randy Plummer; five grandchildren, Claire (Johnson) Egan and husband, Alec, Emily (Johnson) Bolling and husband, Darius, Henry Johnson, Elli Plummer and Marshall Plummer; four great-grandchildren, Roosevelt and Anders Egan, and Lorelei and Amos Bolling; one sister, Anna Clare (Plummer) Ray, and her husband, Dennis; one brother-in-law, Gary Gombert; and one sister-inlaw, Candy Gombert.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024, at First United Methodist Church of Boerne.
Instead of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Boerne First United Methodist Church at 205 James St., Boerne, Texas 78006; The American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org; or a charity of your choice.
