Joyce Allene Berry Young, 89, passed away on April 30, 2024. Joyce was born in Houston, Texas, Dec. 30, 1934, to Leo Francis Berry and Jewell Allene Guthrie Berry.
She excelled in school, began reciting poetry, and playing the accordion and piano at the age of 5. She was undoubtedly gifted as a child and destined to be a musician. She began teaching accordion lessons to adults by the age of 15. Joyce graduated from high school at 16 and received her degree in music education from the University of Houston.
Joyce dedicated her life to music and teaching others the joy music brings. She was a devoted educator in the Boerne Independent School District for 25 years. She served as choir director, played the piano, accordion and organ for various churches, choirs, bands, ensembles, theater groups and nursing homes throughout her community.
A longtime resident of Boerne, Joyce will be remembered for her kindness, courtesy to others, sense of humor, unending generosity, strength of spirit and unwavering faith.
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Leo and Jewell Berry; her late husbands, the Rev. Dr. Charnel Robert Flournoy and Warner Lee Bowman; son, Marcus Allen Flournoy; motherin- law, Avis D. , as well as loving friends, family and extended family members.
She is survived by her husband, George A. II; daughters Leota Sharnell Flournoy De Los Santos (Carlos) and Sharla Allene Flournoy (Angie); granddaughters Shae Lanell De Los Santos Silva (Victor) and Shanna Austin De Los Santos; and great-granddaughter Selina Inez Silva.
She is also survived by numerous special Berry, Flournoy, Bowman and extended family and friends.
The family invites you to attend the memorial service, celebration of life and reception for Joyce, which will be held at 11 a.m. May 18 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Boerne.
