More than 800 people braved Monday’s arctic blast and showed up to watch the Greyhounds host cross-town rival Champion in their second- round district meeting.
The Chargers won the first game in December and were looking for the sweep, but Boerne High managed to split the season series after the Greyhounds rolled to a 75-54 victory before 815 fans.
After Monday’s contest, both teams are still on the outside looking in as far as the district playoff picture. The Chargers (21-8 overall) are 4-6 in 26-5A and the Greyhounds (17-10 overall) are 4-7 and stand in sixth and seventh place.
Neither team can dwell on Monday’s outcome too long since they are both back in action Friday. Champion hosts Pieper and the Greyhounds visit Alamo Heights as the teams are scrambling to finish in the top four in the district standings to make the playoffs.
BHS coach Kimble McHone said it was a big win for a couple of different reasons.
“It was a good, all-around game and I’m so proud of the guys,” he said. “We needed that one in more than one way. You don’t want to lose to your in-town rival twice but more importantly we got our fourth win.”
Chargers coach Chris Adamek gave credit to the Greyhounds for their fast start. After Champion scored the first points of the game on a Baeden Burdick 3-pointer, the Greyhounds netted the next 7 for the 7-3 advantage and never trailed from there.
Boerne went into halftime with an 18-point lead at 38-20.
“They put us on our heels, they played great and shot really well. We were spinning our wheels for a little bit on offense and defense, we could never get into a rhythm,” Adamek said. “When you get down like that, you start pressing a little bit. We could never quite get back in, we made a push to get back in but just didn’t have the juice tonight, all credit to the Greyhounds.”
Champion made a run at Boerne in the third quarter and scored the first 7 points of the period. The Chargers kept chipping away at the lead and a Gavin Peck 3-pointer from NBA range, trimmed the lead to 7 points at 41-34 with 3:19 left in the third as part of a 14-3 run.
The Greyhounds responded with a 34-20 spurt to end the game and pushed it back to a double-digit lead.
BHS closed out the game by scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter as Casen Hoegemeyer, who scored in every stanza, tallied 7 in the quarter, Nic Hernandez had 8 in the fourth and Noa Sanchez netted 5 in the period as the three scored 20 of their 28 fourth-quarter points.
Hoegemeyer and Slade Salinas led the charge in the first quarter as they both had fast starts. Hoegemeyer netted 10 in the opening period and finished with 26 points in the game and knocked down six 3-pointers.
“Hoegemeyer really played well,” Adamek said, “he’s a fantastic player.”
Salinas found some good looks around the rim and netted 7 in the first quarter on his way to 12 first-half points.
“Slade had a great first quarter just by driving the basketball,” McHone said.
Burdick matched Hoegemeyer with 26 points and scored in every quarter as well.
McHone said if they can play down the stretch like they did Monday, it’ll help their chances of making the playoffs.
“I think the last three or four games we’ve played the best basketball of our season and tonight we shot the ball really well,” he said. “When you shoot the ball like we did tonight and score 75 points, you’re going to be tough to beat.”
For the Greyhounds, Hoegemeyer netted 26 points, Nic Hernandez scored 15, Salinas had 12, Hank Hendrix finished with 9, Sanchez 5, Hutson Hendrix had 4, Julien Hartman scored 3 and Will Traylor made a free throw.
For Champion, Burdick finished with 26 points, Kristian Herrera added 14 points, Gavin Peck scored 8, Nik Georgelos netted 4 and Noa Basco had 2 as only five Chargers scored in the game.
Champion has been without Logan Scott in their last few games and Adamek said they really miss him.
“Hopefully Logan will be back healthy by Friday, he’s a key contributor for us,” Adamek said.
