With the district-season winding down in girls basketball, Wednesday’s contest between Boerne Champion and Boerne High at Charger Gym meant a lot to both teams and not just for bragging rights.
The Lady Hounds are closing in on a postseason spot and a win would help with that, while the Lady Chargers were fighting for their playoff lives and a victory would’ve helped their cause.
Wednesday’s contest was close for a half before the BHS girls turned up the heat from the outside in the third quarter to pull away.
The Lady Hounds broke open a competitive game by draining seven 3-pointers in the second half on its way to a 64-30 win.
BHS swept the Chargers this year, but bragging rights aside, Wednesday’s win improves the Lady Hounds to 9-4 in district (18-11 overall). They hosted Alamo Heights Friday and a win against the Mules clinches a playoff spot for the Boerne girls.
“So 9-4 (in district), we have a big one Friday with Alamo Heights, they’re right behind us and (Kerrville) Tivy in district,” BHS coach Amy Ruede said. “If we get that win, that should solidify our spot, so we need to take care of business.”
Champion is 3-9 in district and Wednesday’s loss eliminated the Lady Chargers from postseason contention. The Chargers are 15-14 overall and have four left and are playing for a winning record.
Champion played a much more competitive game against the Lady Hounds than in their first meeting when BHS won in December, 92-34.
The Lady Hounds held the early advantage but Charger Addison Darter hit a 3-pointer to open the second quarter and the BHS lead was down to six at 17-11.
One thing Champion did well was to limit the Lady Hounds to four 3-pointers in the first half. In their first meeting, Boerne finished with a school and district record 17 3s against the Chargers.
“We had 14 turnovers in the first quarter tonight but after that we cleaned it up, that’s what allowed us to do so much better in the second quarter and climb back into it,” Chargers coach Jason Sanders said. “It made it competitive, but they just got hot in that third quarter.”
After taking a 30-18 edge into halftime, the Lady Greyhounds came out on fire in that third quarter. They hit four 3-pointers to start the stanza for a quick 12-0 spurt and that was the difference in the game.
Four different players hit 3s in the quarter as Savannah Salinas, Chloe Donnell, Meredith Mcleod and Oleyvia Ramos all drained long-range shots to make it 42-18. Ramos added another 3 to give BHS five in the quarter.
“We needed to get refocused at halftime. We just talked about playing our game,” Coach Ruede said. “We came in a little flat and needed to be aggressive and then we started hitting shots.”
While Boerne was raining 3s in the third, the Chargers struggled offensively and didn’t score their first points of the period until Ainsley Darter hit a 3-pointer with 3:34 left.
Hailey Winn added two free throws in the quarter but those 5 points would be their only points of the period, as BHS outscored them 19-5 and took a 49-23 advantage into the final stanza.
“We held them to four 3s in the entire first half and then they came out and hit a 3 on four of five possessions in the third quarter and we were cold and couldn’t knock anything down,” Coach Sanders said.
Boerne opened the fourth quarter with another 3, this one from Mcleod, while Donnell nailed another to give the Lady Hounds 11 3s in the game, with seven coming in the second half.
For BHS, Chloe Donnell led the team with 15 points and drained three 3s, Oleyvia Ramos hit a pair of 3s and finished with 14 points, Meredith Mcleod drained four 3s – one in each quarter – for 12 points, Savannah Salinas hit two 3s and netted 8, JT Hernandez scored 7, Addison Sauer scored 4, while Jenna Ruede and Hartlee Menn chipped in with 2 points apiece.
For the Chargers, Hailey Winn paced the team with 10 points, Addison Darter nailed two 3s in the second and finished with 6 points, Ainsley Darter hit a 3 and scored 5 points for the Chargers, Savannah Wayment drained a 3 in the third for 3 points as Champion hit four 3s in the game, Saoirse Ray added 4 points and Kam Edwards netted 2.
