LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

On coal, China and climate

Editor, The Progressive Views article in the Boerne Star on Jan. 12 by The Kendall County Democrat was absurd. As Ronald Reagan once said, “There you go again.”

According to the International Energy Agency, “Global coal demand is expected to grow by 1% in 2024 to an all-time high of 8.77 billion tonnes (Bt).” That is billion metric tons. They go on to say, “At the regional level, coal demand in China is expected to grow by 1% in 2024 to reach 4.9 Bt, another record.”

China is burning 56% of the global coal production. One third of the global coal production is burned for power generation in China. Apparently, the Progressive View is that as China burns more coal, Americans should cut back on our use of petroleum.

He goes on to say, “The incoming administration tells us that climate change is a hoax ...”

The progressives always tell us to trust the science, yet they usually ignore the science of geology.

Geology is the history of the Earth. The geological record tells us that sea level has risen 400 feet since the last Ice Age, 18,000 years ago. The geological record also tells us that we are currently in an interglacial period. During the last interglacial period, 125,000 years ago, sea level was 25 feet higher.

He goes on to tell us that “China understands the risk of climate change and will be leaving us in the dust when it comes to solar energy and electric cars.” China is leaving us in the dust, the coal dust.

We can’t build enough solar farms and wind turbines to power our economy. The progressives also ignore the fact that many wildfires are caused by downed electric power lines.
