Rangers win wild one over Chargers as teams combine for 27 3- pointers
Peck knocks down nine 3s for Champion to set school record
Boerne Champion’s Gavin Peck had a record-setting night for the Chargers boys basketball team last Friday after he knocked down nine of their 15 3-pointers against Smithson Valley.
However, the Rangers kept pace and matched that with a dozen 3s of their own and went on to defeat the Chargers, 78-70, in a shootout where 27 3s were made.
Champion closes out the first round of district at 4-4 and is 21-6 overall. The Chargers were off Tuesday and open the second round of 26-5A Friday at home against Alamo Heights.
Peck’s nine 3s are a school record at Champion and the talented guard got started right away with three 3s in the first and three more in the second.
Kane Lonsdale, Alex Ross, Noa Basco and Baeden Burdick all hit 3s in the second as the Chargers nailed seven 3s in period and finished with 27 points in the quarter to take a 41-35 lead into halftime.
Peck dropped in two more long-range shots in the third but it was the Rangers turn to heat up and they outscored the Chargers 20-14 and tied it up at 55-55 heading into the final stanza.
Smithson Valley kept it up in the fourth quarter and had their best scoring period of the night with 23 points to outdo Champion, 23-15.
After registering 27 points in the second, the best the Chargers could do in any of the other three quarters was 15, which came in the fourth.
Peck had another 3 in the final stanza to go with two 2-point buckets and another 2 in the third, on his way to 33 points.
