A buzzer beater that shouldn’t have counted, counted and it was the difference on the scoreboard in Friday’s district basketball girls game between Boerne Champion and Smithson Valley.
With the game knotted up at 44-44, the Lady Rangers took a shot near the baseline at the buzzer that counted but game film showed the ball was still in the hands of the shooter with the clock at 0:00.
The officials allowed the shot and it gave the Lady Rangers a 46-44 victory over the Lady Chargers.
The Chargers hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 44-44 with about five seconds left.
The Lady Rangers inbounded the ball and got off a shot in the paint, and even though the basket shouldn’t have counted, Champion coach Jason Sanders said the shot at the buzzer isn’t why they lost.
He said they should have never been in that position to begin with.
Champion slips to 3-7 in district and Smithson Valley is 2-7 in 26-5A. The Lady Chargers are 15-12 overall and were off Tuesday before visiting Alamo Heights Friday.
There was never a whole lot of separation between the teams and the Chargers were up 12-10 early and had a good second quarter after outscoring the Rangers 13-9 for the 25-19 lead at halftime.
Smithson Valley made a run in the third quarter and won the stanza by 10 points at 17-7 and held a 36-32 lead at the end of the period with all 7 of Champion’s points coming from Savannah Wayment.
It was back and forth in the fourth quarter and tied at 44-all before the Rangers hit the final shot.
Hailey Winn led the Chargers with 12 points and tallied 6 of those in the fourth quarter, Wayment finished with 11 points, Taylor Burk scored 7, Ainsley Darter and Addison Darter both netted 6 and Kam Edwards finished with 2.
