Crews from the Texas Department of Transportation will be working on a stretch of State Highway 46 this week, near where several fatal collisions have occurred in the past few months.
Kendall County Precinct 1 Commissioner Jennifer McCall confirmed Thursday that TxDOT maintenance crews will be retexturing the roadway surface on State Highway 46 about three miles west of Interstate 10.
This is the same location where two people were killed in a two-vehicle accident on Jan. 5.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a black Mazda CX-5 was traveling westbound on SH 46 at about 3:30 p.m. last Sunday when a septic truck in the eastbound lane veered into the other lane, striking the Mazda.
The car burst into flames and exploded with the driver still trapped inside. Attempts by a witness and first responders to extricate the non-responsive driver failed, and he perished at the scene.
A female passenger in the Mazda — described in the police report as “breathing but unconscious” by EMTs at the scene — was removed from the car but died later that night at University Hospital.
The driver of the septic truck, also transported to University Hospital, was listed in stable condition.
The stretch of SH 46 was closed for nearly four hours before reopening at 7:30 p.m.
This is the same area of SH 46 where three members of a Pipe Creek family were killed in late October, when a pickup crossed double-yellow lines and collided head-on with their car, killing all three occupants.
TxDOT crews will be working on the roadway from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 14-15. Flag crews will control traffic as the crews retexture the road. Portable roadside message boards will alert traffic in advance of the construction work.
