While the proprietors of Studio Comfort Texas, Jeannette MacDougall and Cara Hines, are no strangers to HCCArts, the gallery is new to the art partner membership. As such, HCCArts will announce the opening of new exhibits and workshops offered throughout the year.

“Studio Gallery” is how MacDougall and Hines reference the unique environment they have created, combining display and integrating the community through fine arts classes. The artist-studio-gallery is home to an exclusive group of fine arts educators and artists.

The gallery is located in a historic building at 716 High St. in downtown Comfort, walking distance from a lovely lunch at the High Street Cafe. Studio Comfort opened its doors in January 2019.

MacDougall and Hines’ partnership apparently was written in the stars, bonding instantly several years ago when Hines visited Comfort – sharing what has been described as their artistic sensibilities, gypsy spirit and joie de vivre. MacDougall has lived in Kendall County since the mid 1980s and brings her experience as a professional artist and instructor of the Southwest School of Art to the Hill Country community. At the time of Hines’ visit to the gallery, she was gallery manager at the Center for Contemporary Art in Abilene, Texas, and a practicing artist.

MacDougall and Hines’ focus is on expanded art programming, gallery artist representation and guest artist workshops. Their recent acquisition of another historic space at 713 High St. has been named ARTSPACE and allows for an expansion of fine art instruction, weekly life drawing classes, a Midsummer Art Camp series, homeschool programs and the addition of a dedicated encaustic studio.

The current exhibition through May 1 is a mustsee. Artist, Polly Jones’ exhibit, Daydreams in Bright Hours, is described as, “An exploration into the possibility of transcendence in the midst of ordinary life.

Bright sunlight shines through the studio window and illuminates objects on a table. Eventually, flowers wilt and the sun changes position. That one perfect moment passes and a broader recognition of time filters into the evolving image. A sense of mindfulness and gratitude for a particular moment becomes part of the painting.”

Jones grew up in the flatlands and big sky country of Littlefield and Plainview, Texas, receiving her BFA in painting from Abilene Christian University. She lives and works in Abilene with her husband, an artist and professor.
