Champion boys throttle Tivy, 73-49

Boerne Champion evened its district record to 3-3 after the Charger boys basketball team defeated Kerrville Tivy Friday in Boerne.

The Chargers’ lopsided 73-49 victory over the Antlers makes them 20-5 overall and snaps their two-game skid in 26-5A to leave them at .500 in district as they close out the first round this week.

Champion hosted Veterans Memorial Tuesday and then visit Smithson Valley Friday before starting the second round next week.

The Chargers had a strong start last Friday and were up against the Antlers by double digits at the end of the first quarter, 23-11.

Champion poured it on in the second and outscored Kerrville, 20-6, with all 6 of Tivy’s points coming at the free-throw line, to give the Chargers the 43-17 halftime lead.

Champion’s Nik Georgelos (22) knocked down three 3-pointers as the Chargers had 11 of them last Friday against Kerrville Tivy.

Star photo by Kerry Barboza Champion hit double digits in the final two quarters with 16 in the third and 14 in the fourth for 30 secondhalf points. The Antlers tallied 12 in the third and had their best quarter of the night in the fourth with 20 points but it wasn’t enough to catch the Chargers.

Champion shot it well from outside and finished with 11 made 3-pointers in the game.

Baeden Burdick had the hot hand and dropped in four of them on his way to 21 points.

Gavin Peck hit two 3s and tallied 12 points and also dished out 10 assists to make it a double-double.

Logan Scott scored 10 points for three Chargers in double figures, Nik Georgelos knocked down three 3s and finished with 9 points, Kristian Herrera netted 8 points, Kane Lonsdale made a 3 and scored 5 points, Alex Ross chipped in with 4 points, Noa Basco hit a 3 for 3 points, while Marcus Matos made a free throw.
