After a short break, the Comfort girls basketball team kicked off district action last Friday against Florence.
With balanced scoring and a pair of freshmen holding down Florence’s leading scorer – Emerson Herring – the Deer dominated in a 40-14 triumph.
Comfort starts district at 1-0 and is 8-12 overall. The Deer travel to Blanco on Tuesday and host Ingram Friday.
Comfort was up 7-2 over Florence after one and then outscored the Lady Buffs in the second quarter, 13-6, for 20-8 halftime lead.
Things slowed down for both teams in the third and the Deer tallied 5 and Florence scored 3 to make it 25-11 after three stanzas.
Comfort picked things up in the final period and had their best scoring quarter of the night with 15 points, while the Deer defense held Florence to 3 points again.
Jaelyn Ruelas led Comfort with 11 points, Jael Hernandez added 9, Molly Gowan scored 7, Alexa Lozano netted 6, Cynthia Leos chipped in with 5 and Danielle Ruelas finished with 2.
Gowan grabbed 13 rebounds, Lozano had 8 boards, while Hernandez came up with 6 assists and 5 steals.
Prior to playing Florence, the Deer were in the Nueces Canyon Tourney and went 0-3 with losses to Sonora (55-11), Brackett (41-39) and Nueces Canyon (80-36).
