The Boerne Champion girls basketball team closed out the first round of district play Friday with a road trip to Kerrville to take on the Tivy Antlers.

Champion had a strong first half and took a 31-27 lead into halftime but stumbled in the third quarter, which allowed Tivy to catch them on their way to a 59-49 victory.

The Lady Chargers slip to 2-6 in district and 14-11 overall. Champion opened the second round of 26-5A action Tuesday at Veterans Memorial and then hosts Smithson Valley Friday.

Tiv was up 18-10 at the end of one quarter, but the Lady Chargers had a great second stanza and outscored the Lady Antlers, 21-9, and held a 31-27 advantage at the break.

However from there, the game turned in Tivy’s favor after they won the third quarter, 19-2, and retook the lead at 46-33 after the Chargers only made a couple of free throws in the period.

Champion picked up the pace in the fourth quarter and netted 16, but Kerrville basically kept pace and dropped in 13 to stay ahead until the end.

Abby Sommer shot it well for the Chargers and dropped in four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points, Hailey Winn also scored 12 points and went 6 for 8 from the free-throw line, while Addison Darter added four 3s and chipped in with 11 points for three in double figures.

Taylor Burk was a point away from making it four in double figures after she tallied 9, Savannah Wayment added 3 points and Ainsley Darter chipped in with 2.
