The Boerne Champion girls basketball team played toe-to-toe with Wagner through most of the first half during Tuesday’s district game, but a 6-0 spurt before the break gave the Lady Thunderbirds the separation they needed.

The Chargers were down 18-15 in the second quarter, but the Lady Thunderbirds came up with a couple of steals and some easy lay-ups for the 6-0 run that proved to be the difference in the game.

Wagner went on to win the contest by 20 points, 58-38, and drops the Chargers to 14-10 overall and 2-5 in district.

Champion closed out the first round of 26-5A action Friday at Kerrville Tivy. They are at Veterans Memorial Tuesday to open the second round of district.

Wagner was leading 27-15 by halftime and then outscored the Chargers in the second half, 31-23.

Hailey Winn turned in a strong game and finished with almost half their points with 17, Taylor Burk added 7 points, Addison Darter hit a couple of 3s for 6 points, Abby Sommer knocked down a 3, while Ainsley Darter and Saoirse Ray both chipped in with 2 points.
