The Texas Historical Commission has approved new THC subject markers for Kendall County that highlight two of its hidden county treasures, the Wren Cemetery and Camino Real San Saba (Camino Viejo) in Kendall County.
The oldest, the Camino Real San Saba, was an old Spanish and Native American pathway. It was noted for its attributes as a natural pathway.
As the trail ranged through Kendall County from San Antonio and traveled all the way to the San Saba River near Menard, it crossed the southwest corner of the original Boerne plot. It was illustrated as early as 1764 on a San Antonio de Bexar map.
Slightly more contemporary, the Wren Cemetery, a post-Civil War African American cemetery, was named for a former slave, Alex Wren, who owned the land upon which the cemetery is plotted. Located a few miles outside of Boerne and containing 122 grave sites and 68 headstones, it has already been recognized as a Historic Texas Cemetery.
With anticipated installations in the fall, the Kendall County Historical Commission will announce marker unveilings. These are always open to the public.
