Boerne Champion slipped to 2-2 in 26-5A boys basketball after New Braunfels defeated the Chargers last Friday.
The Unicorns handed Champion a 52-43 loss at Charger Gym.
Champion sits at 15-4 overall and puts aside district play for a bit. They’ll co-host the Boerne ISD Holiday Tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27-28.
They resume district play on Dec. 31 at Wagner, 1 p.m.
The Chargers were up early at 13-9 to end the first quarter, but the lead didn’t hold.
Logan Scott had the hot hand for Champion and dropped in 9 of their 13 points in the opening period.
New Braunfels caught the Chargers in the second after they netted 13 and held Champion to 8 points to give them a one-point advantage at halftime, 22-21.
The Unicorns also won the third period, 13-11, and took a 35-32 edge going into the final quarter.
NB pulled away in the final stanza and went up by 10 on three occasions, the last at 48-38 with only 1:06 left on the clock.
The Unicorns then scored a 2-pointer and opened up a 12-point advantage to ice it and finished strong after they tallied a 17-point fourth quarter.
Scott had game-high honors with 21 points for the Chargers and scored in all four quarters with 4 points in the second through fourth periods, to go with 9 in the opening stanza.
Kristian Herrera netted 8, Gavin Peck added 7, Baeden Burdick scored 3 and Noa Basco had 2.
