Eagles overcome slow start to remain perfect in district

The Geneva School of Boerne boys basketball team traveled to New Braunfels Christian Academy Tuesday night in a battle of district unbeatens.

Both teams entered the contest with 2-0 records in district play and NBCA had a strong start on Tuesday, but it was Geneva that remained undefeated after the Eagles recorded a 66-52 win.

Geneva is 3-0 in district and 15-3 overall. They play in the Marble Falls Faith Academy tournament this weekend.

Eagles coach Julius McNeal said there was a lesson in Tuesday’s game about being ready to play from the opening tip for his No. 6 TAPPS state-ranked team.

“NBCA is a really good team and I think our guys came out a little flat in the first quarter. We have to get used to everyone bringing their ‘A’ game against us,” he said. “It’s something new for us but with us being one of the favorites to win the district we have to show up ready to play four quarters in every game because the team we are facing will be.”

NBCA came out strong and was up at one point in the opening period, 18-4, before taking a 19-9 lead into the second stanza.

Geneva’s Wyatt Bruss hit a half-court shot at the end of the first quarter and maybe that sparked the team because over the next three quarters, Geneva outscored NBCA, 57-33.

“That shot must have taken the lid off of the rim for us,” McNeal said.

The Eagles only allowed 5 points in the second quarter and went into the half with the lead, 26-24, and never looked back from there.

Jake Roberson paced the team with 28 points, Colton Lutz added 19, Bruss scored 13 and Harlan Mangum netted 6.
