Saturday’s first-ever meeting between the Boerne High and Boerne Champion girls basketball teams turned into a perfect storm for the Lady Greyhounds.

Boerne knocked down 17 3-pointers and forced 33 turnovers on its way to dominant 92-34 victory over the Lady Chargers.

The 17 made 3-pointers is believed to be a school record for the Lady Hounds team that has won three district games in a row and is 3-2 in 26-5A (9-9 overall), while the Lady Chargers are 2-2 in district (12-6 overall.)

Neither team can dwell on last Saturday’s game too long because they were back on the court Tuesday as 26-5A action continued.

Boerne High was at Alamo Heights Tuesday and then off Friday. Champion hosted Pieper Tuesday and visits New Braunfels Friday.

Boerne’s press gave the Chargers problems and led to some easy transition points for the Lady Hounds. BHS was up 16-0 before Champion could get on the board.

The Hounds bumped the lead to 25-2 before Champion would score again with a late free throw with 12 seconds left in the quarter.

Boerne was on fire from the outside and knocked down four 3s in the opening stanza, followed up by seven more 3s in the second for 11 at the half.

Chloe Donnell and Savanah Salinas hit four 3s apiece in the half and Donnell even completed a 4-point play after she was fouled on a made 3.

It was a packed gym, but BHS coach Amy Ruede said their approach was that Champion was just another district opponent.

“We wanted to come in and treat it like any other game. Emotions were high on both sides just because they’ve known each other since they were little,” she said. “We just wanted to come in and make them a faceless opponent and jump on them at the beginning.”

That’s what Boerne did and it was 25-3 after one and 53-14 at halftime.

Chargers coach Jason Sanders said the atmosphere may have bothered his team.

“There were a lot of people here and it’s fun to play in that kind of environment, but I think it may have affected our nerves a little bit,” he said. “We’ve got to come out ready to play and we didn’t do that today.”

Once the second half started, the Lady Hounds kept shooting from long range and drained six more 3s, three from Melia Gonzalez in the final quarter.

“We were able to just kind of build on that lead and kept our foot on the gas,” Ruede said.

The Hounds tallied 39 points in the second half and the Chargers scored 20 over the final two stanzas.

Hailey Winn led Champion in scoring with 8 points, Kam Edwards added 6, Addison Darter made two 3s for 6 points, Ainsley Darter finished with 4 points, Abby Sommer sank a 3 for 3 points, Saoirse Ray had 2 points and Brielle Burdick made two free throws for 2 points, while Lorena Barreiro, Jenna Koepke and Taylor Burk hit one free throw each.

Donnell led the Boerne girls in scoring with 24 points in only three quarters and drained five 3s in the game, Meredith Mcleod chipped in with 18 points and hit two 3s, Addison Saur recorded 14 points and had a 3 and Savannah Salinas netted 12 points behind four 3s as four BHS players were in double digits.

Jenna Ruede nailed a 3 and finished with 9 points and Gonzalez also finished with 9 points with her three 3s in the fourth as two more players were a point away from double digits.

JT Hernandez hit a 3 and Oleyvia Ramos scored 3 points.

Sanders and the Chargers get a rematch at home with the Greyhounds on Jan. 21 and he’s hoping for a better outcome.

“We have to play within ourselves and take care of the ball and understand what we’re trying to do and where we’re trying to go and execute the game plan,” he said.
