A strong second quarter by the Champion boys basketball team against Boerne High proved to be the difference in their first-ever meeting Saturday at Charger Gym before about 1,000 fans.
Champion outscored the Greyhounds in that second quarter, 15-3, to open up a double-digit lead. BHS fought back in the fourth period to make it interesting, but weren’t able to overtake the Chargers team that went on to post a 55-47 win.
It’s back to business for both. The Chargers are 1-1 in district (14-3 overall) and were at Pieper Tuesday before hosting New Braunfels Friday.
The Greyhounds are 1- 2 in district ( 10- 5 overall) heading into Tuesday’s home game with Alamo Heights.
Last Saturday’s game was knotted up at 11-11 at the end of one quarter, but the Chargers got some separation in the second.
Boerne only tallied 3 points in the second quarter, all from Julien Hartman, with a free throw and a 2- point bucket that didn’t come until there was 1:30 left before halftime.
Champion’s Gavin Peck hit a couple of 2s and 3s for 10 points in the second period, while Nik Georgelos added 5 points with a 2 and a 3.
Peck and Georgelos were the only two Chargers who scored in the quarter but it was enough to help Champion outscore the Hounds, 15-3, and take a 26-14 lead into halftime.
Once the second half started, the Chargers hit for 15 again in the third and Boerne netted 10 to give Champion a 41-24 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Champion lead approached 20 points but that’s when the Hounds started to chip away and make a game of it. Boerne cut it to 10 points and then it was down to 7 points at 46-39 after a 3-pointer with 3:30 remaining.
BHS drained five 3-pointers in the quarter, four from Nic Hernandez and another from Noa Sanchez as they finished the stanza with 23 points and outscored the Chargers, 23-14. “ If we played the whole game like we did the fourth quarter we might have had a shot at it,” BHS coach Kimble McHone said. “We fought, we didn’t give up and came back but we got a little too far behind. We were always two or three possessions away from it.”
Once Boerne had cut it to 7 points with 3:30 left, the Chargers slowed it down and drained 90 seconds off the clock before they scored on a lay-up with 2:00 remaining and bumped their advantage to 9 points.
That 7 points was as close as the Greyhounds came to catching the Chargers team that went 8 for 10 at the free-throw line in the fourth.
Of their 14 points in the final stanza, 8 came at the line, while Logan Scott hit a couple of 2s and Peck added a 2 pointer to go with his four made free throws in the fourth.
Saturday’s game was special for Champion coach Chris Adamek because he is a Greyhound graduate and now coaches the Chargers.
Adamek was part of the 1990 BHS boys team that played for the state title.
“I told the team that I have my memories from my high school playing days and now it was time for them to go make their own memories,” he said.
The rematch between the two BISD schools is set for Jan. 20 at BHS and the Greyhounds will add four football players to the mix.
“The next time we play, we’ll look way different,” McHone said. “We’ll put some athleticism on the floor and have some experience with those (football) guys.
“We’re going to get better, hopefully we’ll get better and have time to get it all meshed before it matters,” McHone continued.
Logan Scott led the Chargers with 17 points, Gavin Peck added 16 points, Nik Georgelos netted 8, Baeden Burdick scored 6, Alex Ross and Kristian Herrera both chipped in with 3 points and Noa Basco had 2.
Nic Hernandez paced BHS with six 3-pointers for 18 points, Noa Sanchez finished with 14 points, Julien Hartman netted 9, Casen Hoegemeyer added 4 and Slade Salinas hit two free throws.
