CELEBRATING THE ARTS
MixHaus Gallery presents The Things We Carry through Dec. 31. Featured artists are Laura Mijangos- Rapp, mixed media paintings, and Sandy Whitby, mixed media abstracts.
At its heart, The Things We Carry is a meditation in color on the invisible forces that weigh on us and lift us up — the memories that haunt, the loves that sustain and the losses that linger in our hearts.
The two San Antonio- based artists offer us not only a reflection of their inner worlds but an invitation to consider the things we, too, carry in our own lives. The exhibition speaks to the strength, vulnerability and complexity of being human, as told through the eyes of two women who have lived, loved and experienced much.
Mijangos-Rapp layers color, texture and emotion on canvas to express the inner worlds and stories of women. Her paintings pulse with an inner strength, bringing to life the deeply personal narratives of feminine experience, from joy to sorrow, and the resilience that bridges the two.
“The myriad moments of my life and the spiritual understanding gathered during daily living are the things I carry with me,” she states.
Whitby, a process painter, creates gritty, textural abstracts that vibrate with the raw energy of discovery.
Her bold, layered works evoke the contradictions that live within us in our daily lives, using texture and form to explore the tension between order and disorder.
Together, Mijangos-Rapp and Whitby offer a powerful reflection on the emotional burdens and gifts we carry throughout our lives.
“Using tar, metals, enamel paints, oil stick and other mixed media materials ... for me, the act of creating is simply about the energy of discovery with a ‘no fear’ attitude,” Whitby says.
