The Boerne High football program has claimed two regional championships in the past three seasons, one at the 4A level in 2022 and again this year as a 5A.
In order to win the region and get to the state semifinals a team generally has to score a lot of points like the Greyhounds have done this year.
Boerne is averaging 44 points a game in 2024 and it seems that whenever anybody on the offense scores, they credit the offensive line or “The Great Wall of Boerne” as they are also known.
Two seasons ago, the Hounds made it all the way to the state finals and BHS coach Che Hendrix said this year’s line is just as talented as that 2022 group.
“They’re very similar,” Hendrix said. “They have size and strength and it’s one thing to have size, but they do a great job of moving and are flexible because they play other sports.”
Only one of the starters from the 2022 team is still with them and that’s 6-foot-6, 315-pound Logan Schram, who will sign with TCU in February.
Hudson McNew starts at left tackle, Schram is the left guard, Logan Fritcher is the center, Werner Wieboldt is the right guard and Keegan Fischer is the right tackle.
Wieboldt said they’re just doing their job.
“We practice hard and give it our all on every play,” he said.
Coach Hendrix said that other linemen such as Quinn Young, Conner McLoy, Brandon Browning, Andrew Hernandez and Aidan Riebel all have contributed this season as well.
The bad news for Boerne is that of those 10 lineman, nine are seniors, including all five starters.
“We’re going to lose a bunch of linemen,” Hendrix said grudgingly.
The O-line is coached by David Wilkinson and one thing that makes them stand out according to Hendrix is how in tune they are with the other.
“The thing I appreciate about them the most is how they communicate with each other,” he said. “They talk before a snap, (Fritcher) makes a call and the guards will echo it, the communication they have is outstanding. All five are working together in sync and that’s what makes a great offensive line.”
Sometimes Boerne senior Hutson Hendrix lines up as the quarterback and will take the direct snap and run with the ball. In two games against Victoria West this year, Hendrix ran for seven touchdowns, four TDs in their third-round playoff game and said it’s because of the players on the line.
“Those guys up front, they’re incredible. I know a hole is going to open up, it’s just a matter of when and where and if I’m going to be able to hit it,” he said. “I’m super thankful for those guys.”
