Mules defeat Champion boys in overtime, 53-46

Boerne Champion has had a pretty good run against Alamo Heights lately in boys basketball, eliminating the Mules from the playoffs the last two seasons.

The two met Tuesday in the Muledome in a 26-5A contest and it went to overtime before Alamo Heights got a little revenge by winning the game, 53-46.

It was the district opener for the Champion boys that start 26-5A at 0-1 and are 13-3 overall.

The Chargers hosted Boerne High Saturday, 2 p.m. and then visit Pieper Tuesday.

Champion was up 9-8 after one quarter in Tuesday’s contest, but the Mules outscored them in the second, 11-4, for the 19-13 halftime lead.

Champion won the third, 15-7, and jumped on top, 28-26. From there, the Chargers tallied the first five points of the fourth to open up a 7-point advantage, but the Mules went on an 11-4 spurt to tie it up at 37-all.

The teams traded buckets and it was 41-41 at the end of regulation. It went to overtime where Alamo Heights outscored Champion, 12-5, to get the win.

The Chargers knocked in the first bucket in OT, but only scored once more on a 3-pointer late in the game.

Alamo Heights won it with foul shooting as 10 of their 12 points in overtime came from the charity stripe on 10 of 10 shooting from the free-throw line.

Nik Georgelos finished with 14 points, Gavin Peck scored 10, Kristian Herrera and Logan Scott added 7 points apiece, Baeden Burdick finished with 5 and Alex Ross netted 3.
