SAN ANTONIO – Boerne High’s fourth-round playoff contest with Corpus Christi Miller in the Alamodome last Friday night turned into a shootout and it turns out the Greyhounds had more weapons that the Buccaneers’ defense could handle.
The Hounds rolled to a 65-50 victory over the Bucs and advance to the fifth round or the 5A DII state semifinals.
Boerne (11-3) plays Richmond Randle (14-0) Friday at McLane Stadium in Waco, 7 p.m.
The Greyhounds had the ball 10 times in Friday’s playoff game and scored all 10 times – 9 TDs and 1 field goal – and Greyhounds coach Che Hendrix said he knew they were going to have to score a bunch of points to top the talented Miller squad.
“We thought we had to score every time we had the ball. When you watch them on film, it makes your stomach turn because trying to stop them is hard, nobody has stopped them all year,” he said. “When you have that many playmakers, they’re a match-up nightmare.”
Miller had the ball 11 times and scored 7 touchdowns and while the BHS defense didn’t stop the Bucs from scoring, they slowed them down enough on a few possessions to make a difference in the game.
With Boerne leading 13-7, the Greyhound defense forced a Miller punt thanks to a Cole Durham sack. From there, Boerne marched down the field and punched it in again with a 5-yard Adam Hicks run for the 20-7 lead.
Coach Hendrix said forcing that punt was huge for a couple of different reasons.
“We got that stop early and kind of stole a possession from them and got that two-score lead and it was tough on them,” he said. “We played ping pong from there but we always had that lead which was huge.”
Boerne also forced a punt on Miller’s opening drive of the second half and scored again, this time on an Eli Nikolas 53-yard toss from Hank Hendrix.
Nikolas had a great game and finished with 7 catches for 118 yards and two scores. He also snagged a 33-yard TD pass in the first quarter.
The junior wideout said he took advantage of the match ups he had.
“They were really aggressive; they were playing off but bit hard on short routes,” he said. “I ran a double move and ran by my man.”
With the Greyhounds leading 58-43, Jaxon Baize came up with an interception that the Boerne offense turned into points with a Hutson Hendrix run into the end zone to basically put it out of reach at 65-43 late in the game.
Miller went down swinging and scored its final touchdown of the year with 11 seconds left to hit 50 points, the second most BHS has given up this year. Only East Central, a team that made it to the third round before losing to Lake Travis, tallied more against Boerne this year with 52 points.
Eli Nikolas and Brooks Perez caught two TDs apiece, while Ben Bays hauled in another TD pass from Hank Hendrix, who tossed for 435 yards and 5 TDs.
Adam Hicks and Hutson Hendrix ran for 2 TDs each, while Diego Jimenez kicked a 31-yard field goal and made 8 extra points.
Hicks, who led the BHS rushing attack with 124 yards on 24 carries, said the team believed they could advance this far even when they were 2-3.
“We knew it was possible, but we knew it would be hard. We had never been in 5A before but I knew we had the guys to do it, we have a really talented team and I’m excited that we’re in it,” he said. “It’s crazy how far we’ve come, we were 2-3 at one point so we’ve done a complete 180. It’s a complete buy-in from everyone, it’s awesome.”
