Chargers finish second at Border Olympics tourney

Boerne Champion made the trip to Laredo to play in the Border Olympics boys basketball tournament and had a strong showing after the Chargers went 5-1 at the event to finish second.

Ironically, Champion play Laredo Alexander for the tourney title and the Bulldogs were able to defeat the Chargers.

The two schools met in the Harlandale ISD tourney and the Chargers were able to beat the Laredo school at that event, so the Bulldogs got a little payback in their backyard.

Champion also had two players named to the all-tournament team after Baeden Burdick and Gavin Peck were selected.

The Chargers are 13-2 overall and resumed district play Tuesday at Alamo Heights. After that, Champion hosts Boerne High in the first meeting ever of Boerne ISD boys teams on the basketball court.

The Chargers and Greyhound varsity teams tip off Saturday at 2 p.m., at Champion.

At the Laredo tourney, the Chargers opened with a 62-24 win over Laredo Johnson and followed that up with 51-45 victory over Edinburg North on the first day.

Champion picked up two more victories on Friday after they defeated Laredo Martin, 63-31 and then edged Laredo United South by a point, 59-58.

On the final day of the tourney, the Chargers downed Laredo Nixon, 51-30, and advanced to the finals to play Laredo Alexander and the Bulldogs were able to hand Champion their only defeat at the tourney, 55-23.
