Vaping incidents lead to Champion HS restroom door removals

Boerne ISD work crews removed hallway doors leading to restrooms at Champion High School over Thanksgiving break in an effort to cut down on vaping incidents.

“Due to an increase in the number of reports of vaping at Champion High School, additional measures to ensure student safety were recently taken,” a Boerne ISD statement reads. Action taken includes “the removal of entrance doors from the hallway that lead into restrooms. Some mirrors were also removed to avoid any lines of sight into the restroom from the hallway,” a district spokesman said.

All stall doors inside the restrooms were left in place.

The Champion High School leadership team made the decision, in consultation with district staff.

“Principals are responsible for the leadership of the campus instructional program, ensuring high standards of instruction and student achievement and effective operation of all campus activities,” a district spokesman said.

No other schools have announced taking similar measures at this time.

Possession of a vaping device is prohibited by state law for those under the age of 21. Possession or use of any e-cigarette device is also prohibited in public schools by the Texas Education Code and the BISD Student Code of Conduct.

“We will follow the BISD Student Code of Conduct to the fullest extent possible when reviewing potential student discipline,” the statement read.

Champion’s campus leadership team adjusted hallway duty assignments during passing periods. The school’s safety and security staff will continue to monitor restrooms during instructional time as part of its campuswide checks.

“Safety and security are always our highest priority and we take all information shared with us seriously,” the district stated. “We appreciate the support of our parents and community in our efforts to keep students safe and responsible while at school.”
