State-ranked Lady Chargers fall in non-district contest

The No. 11 state-ranked Boerne Champion girls basketball team (Texas Girls Coaches Association) took a break from 26-5A action and played a non- district contest Tuesday at New Braunfels Canyon.

NBC was able to defeat the Lady Chargers and hand them only their second loss of the season, 57-52.

Champion (10-2) will continue with a few more non-district games this weekend and return to New Braunfels to play in the Jimmy K Classic Tournament. They opened with A&M Consolidated.

In Tuesday’s game, the Lady Chargers were leading 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Cougarettes in the second period, 14-9, for the 29-20 halftime lead.

Champion’s advantage didn’t hold after they were outscored in the second half. Canyon won the third quarter, 16-9, and the Charger lead was down to two points at 38-36 when the stanza ended.

NBC also took the fourth quarter, 19-12, and took the lead away from Champion on its way to the win.

Jenna Koepke led the Chargers in scoring with 12 points, Abby Sommer and Hailey Winn tallied 8 points apiece, Taylor Burk netted 7, Kam Edwards added 5, Brielle Burdick and Addison Darter both added 4 points and Saoirse Ray hit for 2 points.
