Bobcats beat Fredericksburg for first time since 2016

Comfort boys basketball coach Tut Wardlaw has sought to defeat Fredericksburg every year since 2016.

It finally happened last week after the Wildcats walloped the Billies, 71-57.

With the victory, the Cats improve to 2-2 on the season. They traveled to Center Point on Tuesday and play in the Harper tournament this weekend.

The Bobcats open the tourney with Rocksprings and Harper on the first day.

Comfort had a fast start against the Billies and held a 15-8 lead at the end of one and then outscored Fred in the second quarter, 20-11, for the 35-19 halftime lead.

Fredericksburg had its best quarter of the game in the third and dropped in 26 points, but Comfort kept paces and tallied 21 to hold onto a 56-45 advantage.

The Bobcats finished strong and outscored the Billies in the final period, 15-12, to seal up the win.

Comfort shot it well from the field and made 52 percent of its shots and scored 25 points off turnovers.

The Cats had four in double figures after Jaydin Steward netted 16 points, Omar Rivera and Jared Valadez both scored 14 and Jackson Dear tallied 11.

Jovani Zapata was one point shy of making it five in double figures after he scored 9, while Alex Padilla added 6 and Mark Hernandez hit a free throw.

Steward snagged 14 rebounds and Zapata dished out 4 assists, while Steward and Dear both came up with 3 steals.
