Boerne High (9-3) will get a rematch with district foe Victoria West (10-2) in the third round of the playoffs.

Game time is set for 6 p.m., Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in Seguin. The two 13-5A DII schools met on Oct. 18 and the Greyhounds won, 50-33. BHS coach Che Hendrix said while that game was important at the time, it doesn’t matter now.

Hendrix added that the only thing that really matters is what happens Friday. He said the Warriors are better than they were in their first meeting but noted that his team is better too and ready for the rematch.

“ Both teams have improved, both teams are a little different and have changed up a few things,” he said. “We’ve improved offensively and added new packages to our offense and the same thing defensively, we’ve added packages and it has made us dynamic.”

Boerne beat Victoria West in their first meeting with a good mix of passing and running. Coach Hendrix says they “pass the ball to score and then run the ball to win.”

In their game with the Warriors, Boerne quarterback Hank Hendrix, who just received an offer from TCU, threw for 309 yards and 3 TDs on a very efficient 19 for 22 passing.

The Greyhounds scored in all four quarters of that game in Victoria and tallied two TDs in every stanza through the first three periods and then tacked on another score in the fourth.

The Greyhounds tallied 576 yards in that game and ran for 267 yards, with Jeff Morrison rumbling for 176 yards on 35 carries and a touchdown, while Hutson Hendrix rushed for three scores in their goal line package.

Brooks Perez, Matthew Garrison and Elil Nikolas all had receiving touchdowns against the Warriors.

Boerne running back Adam Hicks was still battling an injury at the time and didn’t play, while Blake Burkholder didn’t play on the defensive side of the ball, but both will suit up this Friday vs. the Warriors to make BHS deeper.

Hicks totaled 82 scrimmage yards and had a receiving touchdown last week against Edcouch-Elsa in their second- round meeting in Laredo, while Burkholder finished with 7 tackles against the Yellowjackets, including a tackle for a loss.

The 33 points Boerne gave up to Victoria West was second most in district play. Only Alamo Heights, with 35 points, scored more against Boerne in 13-5A DII action this year.

Victoria West can score and tallied 63 last week against Alice. Hendrix said Alice had a hard time stopping Warriors running back/ quarterback/wide receiver Tristan Bernard.

Bernard rushed for 89 yards and 2 TDs against the Hounds in their first meeting and also caught three passes for 22 yards. He added 44 kick return yards to total 155 yards in the game.

“He’s one of the top players in our area,” Hendrix said. “He’s tough and they move him around a lot.”

Jenesis Jeffries also had a solid game for Victoria West against Alice last week and ran for 151 yards on 19 totes and three scores.

At the time of their first meeting, Victoria West was 6-1 with their only loss coming to Alamo Heights, while Boerne was 3-3, but was starting to put it together after a brutal non-district schedule.

“We started to get our season going after that,” Hendrix said. “We started executing better and started playing with tempo and a sense of urgency and we started playing with a lot of energy, so I like where we are and I like our game plan (going into Friday).”
