BOERNE — The George W. Kendall Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) has awarded Martha Hawkins the prestigious DAR Community Service award for her remarkable contributions to our community.
Through her dedicated work, Hawkins has preserved and maintained the Boerne Cemetery and the burial records of veterans. She currently serves as the president and treasurer of the Boerne Cemetery Foundation.
Under her ongoing leadership, the foundation has expanded and added benches to the pavilion, enhanced landscaping around the pavilion, overseen the care of the oak trees, erected a rock and wrought iron fence around the cemetery perimeter, and collaborated with the city of Boerne in placing a new archway at the main entrance to the cemetery.
Hawkins has demonstrated her dedication by maintaining the cemetery’s burial records through the Historical Research Room at the Patrick Heath Public Library. Her meticulous record-keeping has enriched the community by preserving the history of countless individuals, enabling future generations to explore their family histories.
Her dedication to honoring veterans is also evident through her service with the local Veterans of Foreign War Post 688. Continuing a project that her father started when she was a child, she maintains an up-to-date list of each veteran’s gravesite in the cemetery. Thanks to her efforts, each veteran’s grave is marked on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the December holiday season.
When presenting the award to Hawkins, Chapter Regent Beulah Hughston noted that Hawkins “is a tremendous asset to our community. Her tireless dedication to preserving our history, nurturing the love of history, and serving as a reliable resource for our town deserves recognition and celebration.”
The Daughters of the American Revolution is a service organization with genealogically based membership. Its mission is patriotism, education and historic preservation.
